On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, 19 men hijacked four airplanes and flew them into landmark buildings in New York City, Washington, D.C., and a field in Pennsylvania. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 flew into the World Trade Center towers, which caused both skyscrapers to collapse. American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the western side of the Pentagon, which houses the country's military leaders. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed near Shanksville, Pa., after some of the passengers attempted to regain control. The four planes crashed between 8:46 and 10:03 a.m. Eastern time. Then-President George W. Bush, at a school in Florida at the time of the attack, told the nation hours later that officials believed the attacks were linked.
